Your first appointment at Total Orthodontics
Whether your general dentist has referred you to Total Orthodontics, or you’ve approached us directly, your first face-to-face appointment will take the form of a no-obligation consultation. During the consultation, you’ll meet your orthodontist and they’ll assess your smile.
The consultation is nothing to worry about and you’ll have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you like, so you feel comfortable before committing to any treatment.
How your first appointment works
Consultation enquiry
You can enquire about orthodontics via our website or by telephone. Our dedicated treatment coordinator will then be in touch to provide you with all the information you need prior to booking your appointment, and will answer any questions you may have at this stage. They’ll also take you through treatment options, pricing and ways to pay, and provide any necessary information about the practice.
You may be required to answer some questions during your enquiry to determine your treatment expectations and whether you are dentally fit to begin treatment.
Your assessment
Your orthodontist will carry out a clinical examination of your teeth and jaw to review your orthodontic needs.
They may take X-rays of your teeth or offer a 3D scan - this allows you and your clinician to view your new scan and discuss any concerns. The assessment will help your orthodontist decide if you’re suitable for treatment and choose which treatment type is best for your needs.
Assessment outcomes
Once they’ve assessed your teeth, your orthodontist will let you know the outcome of the assessment. The most common outcomes to expect include:- - You’re ready for treatment and need to decide whether to go ahead
- - Your dental health might need improving, which may be due to tooth decay, gum disease or other oral health issues. In this case, your orthodontist will recommend you visit your general dentist to get the issues sorted, and they’ll see you again when your oral health has improved
Your options
If you’re ready to start with your orthodontic treatment, we’ll talk you through everything you need to know to make an informed decision. This includes your treatment options, the pros and cons of each treatment, how long your teeth straightening might take and the costs involved.
You’ll be able to choose from various ways to pay for treatment, including interest-free finance, lump sum payments or payment in full.

Choosing to proceed with teeth straightening treatment is a big decision, and you need to be sure it’s the right one for you. We’re here to help, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to have all your questions answered by our caring and professional team.
