For some, a trip to the dentist, or in our case the orthodontist, is not always something to be relished. But rest assured there’s nothing to fret about, and our friendly team will make sure you’re looked after every step of the way.

Welcome to Total Orthodontics

Your first appointment with us will usually take the form of a free consultation, where we’ll listen to how you feel about your smile and discuss what you’d like to change. In most cases you will be looked after by a patient care coordinator throughout your visit. Their job is to make sure you understand all of the information that is given to you by your orthodontist, and they’ll also be your point of contact following your initial consultation.

Your first consultation

During your consultation your specialist orthodontist will examine your teeth; x-rays and photographs of your teeth may be taken, and sometimes impressions (moulds of your teeth) are needed to help us decide what course of treatment is best for you. At this point, if you are aged 17 or under, you will also be assessed to see if you qualify for NHS care.

Once we have established whether orthodontic treatment is right for you, we will discuss all the different options available to you and show you examples of the different braces that we offer. We’ll then provide you with personalised quotes for as many different options as you’d like.

What happens next

If you’re ready to start your orthodontic treatment, the next step will be to arrange further appointments to fit your braces. If you’re not ready to start treatment just yet but would like to go ahead in the future, we can arrange to see you again for a review appointment. Or you may decide that orthodontic treatment simply isn’t for you; there’s absolutely no-obligation to proceed.

The NHS waiting list

If you are eligible for NHS care it may not be possible for your treatment to start immediately as we receive a limited amount of NHS funding each year, so you will be placed on our treatment waiting list. A member of our team will be able to explain this in a bit more detail and let you know approximately how long it will be until your braces are fitted.

We hope this provides you with a better understanding of what to expect from your first appointment at Total Orthodontics. If you have any unanswered questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
